Is it Worth it to Get a Student Loan?
Many students find themselves asking the question of whether or not it is worth it to get a student loan. There are both pros and cons to getting a student loan, and since everyone’s situation is different, it is important that you take the time to weigh out the good and the bad and decide whether it is going to be worth it for you to go through with a student loan.
What it is
A student loan is financial aid that is offered to a student who is eligible and who applies for the loan, and which is specifically intended to pay for education costs. Student loans typically carry lower interest rates than other loans and they are usually issued by the government. Federal student loans are the most common but you can also get a student loan through the bank.
Pros
One of the biggest advantages of student loans is quite obvious – that they allow you to further your education without making you come up with the entire lump sum of the cost. In fact, most of the loans allow you to delay the onset of repayments until months after you graduate, which allows you to focus on school and not have to worry about making payments until after graduation.
Cons
There are also a few drawbacks to getting a student loan, including the fact that you have to pay interest. Although you can often find loans with moderate to low interest rates, this still adds up over time and can often even end up being close to the actual amount of the loan by the time the repayment period is over.
Another of the cons of student loans is that there tend to be very low amount limits. There is also the issue of multiple borrowings, as you will have to file and apply for a student loan each academic year. This can be incredibly frustrating and the last thing you need when you are going through college is one more thing on your plate to have to worry about.
Make sure that you are aware of all the details before going through with your application for a student loan before agreeing and signing anything.
