I Can’t Pay For College!

I Can’t Pay For College!

All too often, high school students from low income families do not consider even applying for college because they say they cannot pay for the education and expenses. This is simply untrue. The problem is not that they can not secure enough funding; it is that they are not given enough assistance finding the options available. If you or someone you know is in this situation, please keep reading – and share these tips with anyone that could use them.

Before you decide on a single choice of university to attend, consider this option. Attending a community college for the first two years of a bachelor’s degree will be a significant savings opportunity. You can fulfill most of the general education requirements, and then transfer to the college of your choice to have the final degree program completed. This not only allows you to save money on the standard general education courses, but also lets you have your degree issued from a college with higher status.

Planning to pay for college must begin with filing a FAFSA form. This is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and all high school seniors should be filling one out this year. Submitting forms as close to January 1st of the year you plan to begin will allow sufficient time for funding to be located on the your behalf.

The form itself can be daunting, but if you are persistent in asking for assistance, you will do well. Information collected on the form is important to the future money offered, so be sure to answer all the required questions.

Once the FAFSA has been submitted, start searching for scholarships. This can come from the internet resources, or the counseling department at your high school. Sometimes, even the financial aid advisors for the college you would like to attend will offer options for their specific scholarship programs.

Apply for any and all scholarships you possibly qualify to receive. These are available for a myriad of reasons, and they are not going to need paid back. The different offerings can be for such ridiculous qualifiers as being 1/8 of a certain descent. Requirements to be awarded the money can be as simple as writing a short essay about what a college education could do for you and your family.

When the estimated family contribution is calculated by the FAFSA, you have the option to appeal the decision. Discuss the options with the financial aid advisors at the school of choice, and they can help you submit information that contributes to the expenses of the family that would not be listed in the original application’s calculations. This could be as unique as having an elderly relative need nursing expenses paid, or as simple as struggling to meet daily living expenses as they are presently.

As the dust settles from all the above searching and applying, take a look at the financial aid offering. Accept all that is offered – as long as you truly need it. Do not take the maximum amount of the loan because you would like to buy a new television or living room suit for your mother. Take what you need, so that later when you have to pay it back, it doesn’t take over your ability to support yourself in your chosen career.

The bottom line is that there are many options available for students from any income level to progress to higher education. Sometimes the best graduation gift you could give to that high school senior is the gift of helping them find all the information they need to make it through a college degree.

How to Get the Lowest Interest Rate on Your Student Loan

How to Get the Lowest Interest Rate on Your Student Loan

If you are interested in getting a student loan, then of course you want to try and get the lowest possible interest rate. In order to do this, there are a few steps that you are going to have to take and a few things you will need to be aware of.

Requirements

First you are going to have to be aware of the minimal eligibility requirements for a student loan, which are: show financial need, be studying for an eligible degree or program, maintain satisfactory academic progress, not be in default on another student loan, and register for the Selective Service.

Anyone applying for a student loan is going to want to follow a few specific steps to ensure they have the best chances of being accepted for their student loan. First, you should have a good co-signer in mind, because chances are that you are going to need one so you want to have someone there who has already agreed to put their name on the loan application for you and agree to pay the loan back if you are unable or unwilling to.

Usually students use their parent as a co-signer, but if they have bad credit or you have someone else who is willing and who has a good enough credit history, they should work fine as well.

You are then going to have to fill out your student loan application form and make sure that you get it in by the deadline. This date often changes from year to year and may be different depending on the particular loan you decide to go through. You should also check with your bank and speak to a financial aid advisor who will be able to assess your condition and help you to figure out what the next best move is going to be for you.

Remember to ask around to your family and friends because they may be able to offer you some great firsthand advice on who you should apply to for your student loan and on how you should go about it. Few students these days are able to pay for the thousands upon thousands of dollars that it costs to further their education and attend college, and so chances are that most of your friends have had to go through this process as well.

Are There Medical Services On Campus So I Don’t Have To Use My Loan?

Many people get student loans so that they can live while they are in school. They will use the student loan money obviously to pay for their schooling, and then there will be other things that they will use their money for. When a person gets a student loan check, they will use it for several things. First of all, they will obviously use it to pay for their tuition. This is the first thing that a student loan will be used for. After that, they will use it for things like room and board, and anything else that you need to pay for at your school. This is very important, and you’ll find that you are able to do this quite easily.

You can use your student loan money for any number of things, but it is important to use them for school first. The point of student loans should be that you are able to pay for school using these loans and that you do not have to work while you are in school. Working while you are in school can be something that is difficult to do, and you might find that when you are working you are unable to actually do your school work and that it really isn’t worth it. Therefore, you should use your student loan money in whatever way that you can to make sure that you are able to concentrate on your school and actually get the most out of it.

There are other things that you will probably end up needing to use your school loan refund for. One of those things might be groceries, you might have to pay for groceries and other things with your student loan money. The other things that you might have to use your student loan money for are the other aspects of life, including your medical expenses. If you get sick while you are in school, you might need to pay your bills with your student loan money. Luckily, many schools now have medical facilities that are free for students. As long as you are a student you can go to the school’s student health program and get medical treatment for free or for reduced costs, depending on what type of treatment that you need. Usually you will not have to pay for it out of your student loan money.

Ways to save a little more - Buying second hand books

May 6th, 2008

When a student is accepted by a student loan company and a grant is given to support and assist him or her in the expenses that are required in order to finish his or her schooling and education. It is fair to suppose that both his or her family as well as the student him or her self take enough time to do research and calculate the required amount that would permit him or her to continue and finish his or her education.

It could be that if the requested sum exceeds by far the actual economical requirements of the student, he or she or even the family might be tempted to use the excess amount for a different purpose such as buying a car. A car while being a student might not be as necessary as when the student finishes his or her studies and requires a means of transportation that can assist him or her in the quest for a job.

But having the excess sum might be a temptation hard to resist. If the student or the family succumbs to this temptation, then payments must be made and it can happen –as it generally does- that the student requires an increasing amount of the student loan grant as he or she advances in the career studies, giving less room to extract money to pay for the car.

Obviously, the student will seek to keep his or her car and to this end they might even try to skim as much as possible from the grant that was given to them by the student loan company; as interesting as this might pose to be, it can bring serious problems to the student. However, not all is lost.

In such a case, the student will indeed pay less of the basic capital but most likely, he or she will continue to pay the same amount of interest since it was made with a fixated interest rate. So the student can make a little additional trimming in cutting down on superfluous expenses such as parties, going out and even cutting down on dating expenses for starters.

In addition to this reduction of his or her expenses, a student can trim a little bit more by buying second hand books and school related materials. Nonetheless, it is important to be smart on terms of the trimming so that the student will not sacrifice important materials such as lab coats or up to date books in careers such as medicine where being safe and up to date are just as important as the career itself.

Success Stories - A Physician’s Story - Part 3

He explained that he had approached a banking institution and had applied for a student loan and within the next month, he had been granted the requested sum with which he was able to pay tuition, books and even boarding and living expenses for the rest of the duration of his orthopedic career. My eyes glowed with hope and so did my brothers’, he told us that there were little requisites that we had to provide the banking institution to be able to apply for the loan but that he did not see any reason why I would be denied.

He also said that I must not run out the door and apply on the first student loan institution I could find. That it was of the utmost importance to be sure, as to which student loan company was best for my financial resources and me. That my brother was not going to be able to walk for around 4 months but that I, as a medical student, knew (and I did) that his recovery was going to take longer than that and that the medical bills were just starting to show up.

“but do not get discouraged” he said “you might loose this year, but not the entire career. There is always an appropriate student loan company that can help you, if not private, then federal and if not, then alternative. Keep looking and comment it all amongst yourselves; everyone needs to be involved since you will be needing your whole family”

I remember his words because they have been with me along my entire career and they have saved me many times after that day.

Therefore, after my parents returned two of my brothers and I went to see the student loan companies to see where I would apply. I did all the things that the doctor had suggested and resigned myself to loose that year, which I did despite my parent’s best efforts to prevent this from happening; but with my brother’s sickness we all had to pitch in.

Eventually, almost every single student loan company rejected me because of my family’s medical expenses, I did qualify for a student loan, but the amount was too low for me to even consider it as a possibility since it would only cover tuition expenses, forget books, boarding and living expenses. I was distraught, but then a window of opportunity opened.

In the same loan company that offered me that small amount, a private and unknown company they suggested me to change to a medical school close to home, that way I would only need tuition and book money. Still I could not cover it. Books are necessary when you are studying medicine; yet, I thought, if I changed to the best public school available I would not spend that much in tuition and the rest I could use in books.

My medical school was open to the change and I was able to keep in touch with my former teacher so I could make up for the lack of academic structure in the community college by myself. The loan I needed turned out to be even lower than what I qualified for and, in the end I was able to take on a specialty with another student loan, now at a better school and mostly paid by my own pocket.

That is what I did. Now I am a cardiologist.

Success Stories - A Physician’s story - Part 2

May 2nd, 2008

Now, at the “tender” age of 17 he had fallen from the height of the tree and broken his legs, hip and skull. Funny thing, I always thought he had a thick skull.

Naturally, my family was required to call for an ambulance and take him to the hospital where he had to have surgery to repair his legs and hip. After the surgery the doctor was culminant: He would not walk for at least 4 months so my parents needed to hire additional help to keep “Baby Huey” tended to with all his needs and demands: water, bathroom and so on.

As you can imagine, my dreams and hopes for a future in medicine went “poof!” with every word the doctor told us. I stormed furious into my brother’s room with the very intention to give him a piece of my mind, as I entered, he started laughing as he often did when he tried to reduce the seriousness of any dumbness he had done. As soon as he saw my furious face he changed and asked, truly worried, what did happened. I told him struggling to hide my anger against him and the whole situation as well as my own frustration to see my dreams scattered to the wind.

He apologized with tears in his eyes and said he did not think things through (no wonder!) of course, he had not counted on falling off the blessed tree and on taking away my dreams and hopes for the future. How could I stay mad at him? All I could do after his tears and apologies is to embrace him and silently comfort him as I tried to ponder all my possibilities… Maybe enter as an EMT while I could save enough money to continue medical school, or forget it altogether and look for a job.

My brothers entered the room while my parents went home for a shower, some rest and a meal and started discussing the things to be doing next. My older brothers were all married and they could pitch in some, but not enough to cover all the medical bills of my brother and my medical school tuition.

We were so focused on our discussion that we did not noticed the doctor standing there listening to us. He intervened and told me that he was a student that required financial assistance to be ale to finish his medical school.

Success stories - A Physician’s story - Part 1

April 30th, 2008

I decided once I finished collage I was going to continue deepening my studies and would take on a university career. My family indeed is not rich and we do not have that much money but the first years it was OK.

I decided I wanted to study medicine. Therefore, of course, I wanted to study in the best university possible or medical school and I did my research; there were some amazing ones, private but with out of this world tuition costs! I mean, there is simply no way anyone in his or her right mind is going to pay that much money to become a physician, regardless of the school or university that you are dealing with.

At least, not me and not my family, after all, all these universities really had going for them is the fame, but I did not see many advantages in the schooling program so I turned away from such expensive and famous universities and medical schools. I turned to the no so expensive and not so famous medical schools and private universities ones.

I found that indeed they are not that expensive they have serious lacks in their learning programs as well as in the hospitals where students are practicing and strange fees for unknown things. If indeed I had no problem in paying for my medical career I was not going to loose time and money on a so-so medical school and career; so I turned to the lesser schools: The ones that most often are left behind either because they are too cheap or because they are public.

In addition, I found actually a great medical school, sad to say it was too far away from home and I was going to have to squeeze even more money out of my parents to be able to pay of tuition and boarding-living expenses. It seemed something too steep.

Nevertheless, my family did not allow me to forget this school. They paid my registration and first year tuition and boarding, and they did give me the sufficient money to pay for my living expenses for a whole year. Then disaster struck.

My youngest brother fell off from the house ancient elm. Mom had told him always that he should not climb and even on an occasion or two, she punished him severely. I remember because I was 15 and he was 9.

Success stories -An alternative student loan- Part 2-

April 28th, 2008

Of course, I was charged with penalty fees and other excess interests, but they were even laughable. Around 20 usdlls per month on penalty fees AND excess interests so it was not hard at all to keep up with the payments. Eventually I learned to handle my economics, keep my family sustained, well, and at the same time, continue my education.

In the end, it turned out that I had been paying in excess! And I did not do any math. I continued paying until one day I saw that in the payroll debit account I had more money that what I was supposed to have so I went to the bank and I asked and yelled. I thought it was a mistake on the part of the bank and that I was going to be pinned with some sort of penalty or something for their mistakes.

After a while and, of course, an endless round of searching and combing around in intricate banking procedures I was answered. As it turns out, indeed they did DO a mistake against me. When I applied for the loan and they calculated the interest rate and monthly payments they did not consider everything through, so I was over charged nearly a 60% each month. And I never knew!

Well, once I paid over the 60% of the loan according to the pre-set interest and loan monthly rate established between the bank, and me they reviewed my case to see if they could offer me an additional loan or any other credit type product, which is when they realized that I had been overcharged all this time.

Therefore, they did one of those things banks are always doing…Mixing things up. I was told that they took the excess payment and returned every single dime, then, they decided that if I had the means, I would pay on advance the remaining of the loan.

Therefore, they took back the same amount that would cover the remaining of the loan and I still had money left over! It gave me the necessary assistance to jump-start my practice. So if anyone would ask me if an alternative student loan works I would answer with an emphatically “Yes”.

One thing I would definitely suggest is that if you are planning to apply for an alternative student loan from a banking institutions is to keep all your business in that same branch office and with that particular executive. It is in this manner, the executive will be fully aware of your case and you will not need to keep repeating over and over again what your situation is.

Success stories -An alternative student loan- Part 1-

April 27th, 2008

I had no money whatsoever to actually finish my career. I remember coming out of college and considering entering a University to “round up” my education but I had no financial sufficiency and my family had some issues of their own, so naturally, I could not ask dad to divert any money from his importing business to pay for what he believed it was a whim of my part.

My other family, uncles, aunts, and grandparents had their own problems and even though they did manage to help me with books and other school related things were not in optimal condition to help me out either.

Fortunately, I talked to a friend of mine who happened to be a teacher at a university and who told me about student loans. I promise I did not know about this possibility. He told me that he had sought when it was his turn, the assistance of an alternative student loan, he explained the basic issues pertinent to applying for a student loan from a banking institution and since I am as he was, an independent student, I went for it.

Applying for the student loan was not that hard since the executive was very friendly and kind. The amount of documents and other references I had to present was also low and my employer helped too when the executive took upon her to call him over the phone and cross check my references. I am grateful to all of them.

So I was granted the loan and since it was through a banking institution I asked for the monthly payments to be deducted directly from my payroll debit account; all I needed to do is sign the proper form and I was completely oblivious about everything! Of course, I was asked to open a new account where the money was going to be deposited so that there were no confusions as to if they were deducting the money from the same loan they gave me or what and I was not asked to deposit a minimal amount to be able to open this account.

I paid all the things I needed to pay for my continued education and eventually got my degree. I must be honest and say that there were indeed times where I had not enough money and therefore I was not able to make the payments in time though I was on time most of the time.

The Pros of Student Loans

April 25th, 2008

There are many different benefits and advantages offered to you by student loans, so if you are a student who wants to further their education, applying for a student loan may be one of the best things that you ever do.

There are many advantages that you are offered by a student loan, and which will be discussed in detail here.

One of the biggest benefits, as mentioned before, is that with a student loan you have the opportunity to receive funding to pay for the costs of your post-secondary education, which you may not have been able to afford otherwise. The total cost of school these days is enormous, and very few people have the money to pay for this.

Another feature that makes student loans so worth it is that although you are still taking a risk and making a serious commitment by going through for a student loan, student loans are much more flexible and reasonable than most other loans.

This way you are still taking advantage of all the benefits being offered and yet are being reasonable with your decision.

One of the most positive things about a student loan is that you usually do not have to begin making repayments on the loan until around six months after you have graduated. This is ideal because after all, the last thing you need is one more thing – let alone a bill – on your mind while you are trying to finish school and get your degree.

Just make sure that you do not lose track of time and end up forgetting when your monthly repayments begin, because once you miss one bill it is very easy to get behind.

Student loans are truly one of the best ways to pay for college, but it is still important to remember to wait until you have exhausted all other options first. This is because although student loans are a great option, they are still a type of loan and so this means that you are still going to end up having to pay them back.

They may offer many advantages, but you should always go for the free stuff first, meaning that if you or your parents have money you should see if you can use this to pay for your schooling. It may seem like a lot at first, but really you will be saving yourself money because you will be paying the same amount as you would with a loan, only without the interest.
