Should You Consolidate Your Student Loan?

One of the most common questions that students who have gone through with a student loan ask is whether or not they should consolidate their student loan. There are basically two sides to this argument, and so before you go ahead and consolidate your student loan, you will want to read up on this important information.

First know that one of the biggest reasons a person should consider consolidating their student loan is because interest rates have risen. However even in this situation there are still both pros and cons to consolidating your loan.

One of the biggest advantages that would come from you consolidating your student loan would be because this would lock you in at the current interest rate. That way if the interest rates are low at a particular time you can lock your student loan in for good and means that you will be paying less interest on the loan every month.

Another benefit to consolidating your student loan is that you will generally have a longer repayment period. While unconsolidated student loans have a maximum repayment period of ten years, for consolidation loans it can be up to thirty years which is obviously quite a significant difference.

There are also possible downfalls that would come from consolidating your student loan that you should be aware of. For instance if you consolidate your loan you may be forfeiting the six month grace period that comes with a regular student loan, which would usually mean that you would not have to begin repaying the loan until six months after you graduate.

This means that if you consolidate your loan you may no longer have this grace period and may have to begin repaying the loan immediately after you graduate, if not right away.

More often than not consolidating your student loan is a good thing, and either way you are still getting the funds for your education which is the most important thing. So many people do not further their education only to regret it down the road and most even end up going back to school ten, twenty years down the line.

Make your move now and get ahead in life by furthering your education, and if you need to you should use a student loan to help you achieve your dreams here. Getting a student loan will be one of the best things that you ever do.
